As previously announced, BMB and PFINDER are presenting a GREEN NDT project that has been implemented. The fluorescent penetrant testing of components for the aviation industry has thus become more economical, more environmentally friendly and safer for the testers. Here we present the continuation:
BMB's contractual partners expect a 100% penetrant test with a direct water-washable, fluorescent penetrant of sensitivity class 3 approved in accordance with AMS 2644. The safety-relevant components for the aviation industry pass through semi-automatic immersion and fully automatic overhead conveyor test systems for this purpose. This enables a high throughput rate with constant and reliable parameters.
During penetrant testing, a test agent, the "penetrant", is applied to the surface. The surface must first be cleaned without leaving any residue and all impurities must be removed. Due to its special properties (e.g. capillary action), the penetrant penetrates the finest cracks or pores, provided these are open to the surface.
After a penetration time that depends on the material, the penetrant is removed from the surface with water under precisely defined conditions. After the application of a developer and a development time, the penetrant remaining in fine cracks or pores is absorbed by the developer. When viewed under UV radiation, the indications on the surface become visible. The indications are evaluated by trained test personnel according to the criteria specified by the client. In this way, a decision is made on the further usability of the components.
